Synchronicity with Finkelstein

Another course in online facilitation from Gipps Tafe. Missed this opportunity last year, and i want to make up for it this time around. No it’s not really about synchronicity, rather synchronous online facilitation skills (ie / live, same-time web conferencing sessions). Jonathan Finkelstein is good. He’s one of the real pioneers in this multi-venue seminar facilitation caper. But the first round of the course clashes with the ACE e-learning showcase. “Following on from Jonathan Finkelstein’s highly successful visit to Australia in 2008 GippsTAFE is pleased to announce in collaboration Read More …

Mainstreaming e-learning in ACE .. an impossible dream?

i’d be interested to get comments from anyone in ACE: is e-learning still out on the fringes, a strange and wacky add-on only for geeks? Or has it begun to come in from the cold? Is e-learning becoming part of the mainstream in ACE? For this live conference session (details below) Josie Rose started us off by leading some group brainstorming: what does ‘mainstreaming’ mean to you? On the whole, it was about normalising, acceptance, integration. Josie then spoke of the wonderful “e-mentor” program that she has pioneered, and which Read More …

(cck08) Nancy White on .. appreciative change

The fabulous choc-o-Nancy White was speaking about all manner of things today, including: how to facilitate in a massive online course, and the implications of trust in large networks; the range of identity and boundary from the personal, through communities to networks; new and emerging roles and practices; the value of “appreciative change”, which is related to the appreciative inquiry championed by Marie Jasinski and Maret Staron in ’07 research. Recognise people’s strengths as a starting point for the learning process. Ideas came up around the responsibility of adult learners Read More …

CCK08: Power to force involvement in a course?

Link : CCK08: Power and Auto-Subscribe (the connectivism forums, week 08). In week 08, Stephen decided to exert his power over the masses of people involved in the massive OOC known as connectivism 08. Through the flick of a switch, he drew many back into public conversation. People who know the forum software called “Moodle”, will know that you can “force” your enrolled students to receive copies forum posts via email. Stephen flicked this switch, and hundreds of people around the world started to experience Inbox Pressure from all the Read More …

catching up with the connectivist crowd (week1)

So it’s week 6 already, halfway through the course, and i must sheepishly admit i’ve been ignoring my responsibilities as a student. i’ve been following some of the forum discussions, and some of the connected bloggers, and Stephen’s dailies .. i’ve even made some notes and saved up a few delicious bookmarks. But i haven’t posted any reflections or readings here on the blog. Oh blimey.

Australian ACE e-learning network

Great to be involved in a national e-learning network for Adult Community Education (ACE). Mary Hannan from Adult Learning Australia (ALA) has taken on the role of bringing together some e-learning people in the community sector. Just got together with some people around the continent, in a meeting where Josie Rose told us all about the Victorian ACE e-mentor project, a regional approach that’s emerged from the ’07 Access ACE research trials; Georgina Nou (of Deadly Mob fame) showed us around Second Life, and inspired me to have another go Read More …

New and emerging technologies

The incomparable Robyn Jay is presenting at the ACAL (Australian Council for Adult Literacy) Conference in South Australia, tomorrow (Friday 6th October), on the topic of "Connecting voices: new mindsets, new opportunities". She's asking people what new and emerging technologies are being used by language and literacy practitioners, so i've given a 3minute response on Odeo. (But it doesn't look like i can include it here 🙁

LERN conference in Havana

Back from Cuba .. Well the LERN Conference in Havana was very exciting, very hot, and filled with whispers of radical dissent. What a lovely flavour! 600 delegates full of good ideas. Michael Apple’s keynote was definitely the highlight, setting the tone for the rest of the conference. He railed against the rise of the ultra-conservatives, and urged us educators to get fighting. Mary Kalantzis told us the reason for choosing Cuba – the country has very high indicators on all the UN tests for educational development. (A nation with Read More …
