Adult Learners in Conversation – “A Fuller Sense of Self”

Last night Tricia Bowen spoke about her experience of reconnecting with the adult learners who have shared their stories in this volume. I talked about how great it was to join with Tricia and Lynne in the whole creative and collaborative process of editing. Then Lynne Matheson invited us to launch the video into the world, so we all made rocket-launching sounds, and the champagne flowed. * It was such a good experience filming and editing these stories with Tricia. I would love to hear any feedback, especially related to Read More …

Help – how can I upload files into the google drive space?

Teachers at PRACE need to store audio recordings from class in a shared online space. Lately we’ve been using google drive for this. Sometimes you can upload files directly from your iPad to the “Gdrive”. Other times you might save them to USB stick or a folder on your computer. Here’s a video showing how to upload from ordinary computer (windows), into the Gdrive space. Let us know in the comments below if this seems clear or helpful in any way (or not). It moves pretty fast, you may need Read More …

Video interview with Sia Gazis

Fiona introduced Sia and Michael, and suggested they create an interview-style promotion together for the introductory massage course. Using some footage and photography shot by Lauren, Michael shot and edited 15-20 minutes of additional footage down to 4 minutes. The editing was done in a free, professional-grade software called Lightworks (free for a mildly limited version). There’s a learning curve, of course, but michael would definitely recommend this software to anyone who doesn’t have access to iMovie. If you have iMovie.. use that instead. Future suggestions: Any teachers who are interested Read More …

Michael Chalk appears on television: A House around the Corner

So, recently I was on television, in my role as an ‘e-learning specialist’! (channel 31) Being interviewed was a bit scary, but the wonderful team at “A House around the Corner” have edited the whole thing very well. Definitely worth following their youtube feed, as there’s plenty of other great stories about LearnLocal in Victoria. (Edit: the site seems to be down in 2017.)

Learning skills of the future

Here’s an interesting video with a bunch of educators talking about how the future might work. Names i recognise include Daniel Pink and Greg Black (of education.au). i’ve taken some brief notes on what the educators are talking about, but haven’t really commented with my own response. Many people have been saying this kind of thing in recent years: Schools are like factories, following models of the industrial age; students have more enriched experience outside of schools than in; US schools rank lowest out of all industries surveyed for technology Read More …

Top 3 operating systems – comparing sound & video over a network

Win, Lin and Mac: It’s true that Windows (TM, microsoft corp) occupies nearly all the computers in the known world, but there are other operating systems, and it’s been my side project over the last few years to find out more about all of them. Thanks to the iPod and the iPhone, Apple mac has bounced back from the lean years to become a major player; everyone knows about apple these days. Their reputation says they care about beauty, elegance and simplicity in their design. The iPod comes with no Read More …

Double-check different browsers before sending feedback!

Ha ha. Serves me right for not double-checking in multiple browsers. The screencast channel is working fine on firefox / linux, also in the Opera browser on windows xp. Problem is with java in google chrome browser. Duh. Now i feel silly. On the plus side, now i’ve fixed java on my linux laptop.. that means i can make screencasts and join elluminate from that machine too. Cool. Oh, and AJ from screencast-o was very rapid in supportive response. Thanks AJ. —————————————- So i had discovered something very distressing over Read More …

Has twitter jumped the shark?

The comical folk at current.com have done another twitter satire. It’s funny. Disclaimer: i admit, i have been following some celebrities. Yes i am a twit. (aka miczl) My big issue with Twitter is this: Get A Room. .. if you’re having a private conversation, get off the public airways. Use Skype or messenger. Have a proper conversation. Stop leaving notes in the middle of the road for everyone else to trip over. But that is not how twitter works, so i will just get off my high horse right Read More …

Snapshots and stories: e-learning ’08

Via Rose on the innovations blog (gone now), found this video (below) showcasing stories from the 2008 e-learning innovations projects. People talking about different tools, such as wikis, web conferencing, scenario based learning, blended learning, using a virtual classroom for companionship and classroom buddies. These are many people i worked with as part of the Flexible Learning Framework’s Community Engagement projects. Snapshots and Stories: 2008 E-learning Innovations Projects from E-learning Innovations on Vimeo. All sorts of good stories, including these: Georgina Nou on how they recreated the Alice Springs Telegraph Read More …

Holographic, networked interfacing?

The POV wearable computers in my earlier post had me thinking about how technologies might be integrated more closely with human bodies in future. Not only portable, but wearable. i stumbled upon a TED talks video which demonstrates a new wearable computer-like device. Camera and projector work together with your phone to create touch screens anywhere, linked in with the “hive mind” (portable projection). .. or you can download it yourself from their site. Fantasy and technology continue to converge. In this charming “World Builder” video, a man builds a Read More …
