New Easi Speak adds Journalistic Effect

Someone in the PRACE office bought a new set of the Easi-Speak microphones, before the new year. Well done, someone! (i think it was Jennifer. Champion.) These little gadgets are (reasonably) easy to use: the Red button to Record, and the Green button to Play. It’s a bit more complex than that, but each kit has a microphone, a set of instructions, a big A4 version of the most important bits in the instructions, and a cable to connect to the computer. Essentially, you need to know what the flashing Read More …

Spell with flickr

Spell with flickr is one of my favourite sites ever. You can make a word using images taken from the flickr photo site. eg, what on earth is the: Notes: 1) there’s no mention of copyright, if you really want to be sure, you’ll need to check every letter, eg the question mark is fine, it has creative commons license.. which really means we should have the author’s name as well as the link. Ah i shouldn’t have raised that issue should i? 2) the images all come from the Read More …

How to embed documents in your blog (eg blogger)

Several people on the CAE 23 Things project wanted to know how to embed documents in their blog. There are a few ways. (edublogs allows you to upload documents, but i’m not sure that blogger does. And David made the point that if he’s uploading all the time, he’ll use his storage quota in no time.) The trick is to use an external service, eg Slideshare, iScribd, youtube, docstocs, yudu or google docs (your choice could depend on the kind of document). sign up to another web service (eg scribd, Read More …

23 Things starts up again

Exciting news.. Ann at the college of advanced education (CAE) is bringing some of her Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) teachers along to learn about web2 via the 23 Things course. (The Victorian ACE version of it.) Here we are at the CAE in the heart of Melbourne’s central business district (CBD), with Ann, David, Fiona, Gillian, Eileen and Parama. Most people are choosing blogger to set up their reflective journals, except David who’s investigating edublogs for the first time. The idea of a public reflective journal is central to Read More …

Photos and slideshows on the web

flickr is a terrific site for images. You can search other people’s work, comment on their photos, make contacts.. and share your own photography as well. Suggestion for your own learning: As you browse flickr, think about what makes it a successful site.. and post a reflection in your blog. Add a photo to illustrate. Read more about working with photos on the flexivet 23 Things wiki. Images add an extra dimension to the web, engaging your readers. A good blog post has: some kind of multimedia (eg image, video, Read More …

What is “the blogroll”? Your links out..

The other thing people in the blogging world do is link to each other. People wanted to know how they read and then link to each other’s blogs. Of course there’s always a million ways to do any one thing, isn’t there! You could: subscribe via an RSS reader (eg google reader) – more complicated. add a “friend connection” (via google friend connect) – easy enough. add links in your page via the Layout > Add a Gadget tool – direct on the page. We went for the 3rd option, Read More …

Fix the Web?

i thought this was a joke video at first. You know, the web is broken, and you can fix it from your own work station. No, i hadn’t thought what the punchline might be, which is why i watched the video. An engaging, well-told three-minute overview of how you can fix web sites that you don’t like, using Greasemonkey, a plugin for firefox. i’ve had the plugin for ages, but never known what to do with it; always seemed too technical, even for me. But this quick flick shows you Read More …

Cartoon slideshow

This is a blog post about blogging. (oh-oh … eyes roll) No, actually the point i want to make is about using visuals. This slideshow presentation uses cartoons to make a series of points .. and it’s very effective. Think you can’t draw? Well, how sophisticated are the visuals here, really? Similar points to the ones Sue Waters makes over here. See i don’t do any of the things recommended, which is why i’m writing for myself. Ha ha. At least i enjoy writing. | View | Upload your own
