New and emerging technologies

The incomparable Robyn Jay is presenting at the ACAL (Australian Council for Adult Literacy) Conference in South Australia, tomorrow (Friday 6th October), on the topic of "Connecting voices: new mindsets, new opportunities". She's asking people what new and emerging technologies are being used by language and literacy practitioners, so i've given a 3minute response on Odeo. Resource Sharing continues in '06

Groups of teachers from PRACE, Olympic and Glenroy have continued to work together in the new year, after their LearnScope project in 2005. The “Resource Sharing” project has focussed on: Literacy/numeracy for people with (mild intellectual) disability Low level ESL learners – gathering tubs of materials ESL in the computer room – gathering activities / “teaching recipes” Student stories – publishing into books One extremely valuable resource for us has been the ACEBank resource sharing project, which was set up last year by the brilliant, but sadly disbanded TAFE frontiers. Play the Game

This year (’05) at PRACE, we were very fortunate to have the opportunity to research computer games in a learning environment. Our group of adults studying literacies with Margery seemed to enjoy playing games in their computer session, so we went off to discover what other games might be useful in a literacy-learning environment. My favourite game was AddemUp, from Blue Bug Games – a number game that really challenged people in the group. We found using the data projector very useful, for making this into a group activity. LERN conference in Havana

Back from Cuba .. Well the LERN Conference in Havana was very exciting, very hot, and filled with whispers of radical dissent. What a lovely flavour! 600 delegates full of good ideas. Michael Apple’s keynote was definitely the highlight, setting the tone for the rest of the conference. He railed against the rise of the ultra-conservatives, and urged us educators to get fighting. Learn by TV at Centrelink

Only one month into this Flexible Learning Leader experience and already i’m behind and struggling .. but hey, i’ll catch up any minute now .. The highlight of our Canberra meeting – apart from meeting 40 other FLL’s – was going into the heart of the Centrelink “on-air” live satellite TV training studios – what a buzz! Presenters with proper TV voices operating live TV that goes into every Centrelink office around the country.
