Punk queer femmes get slimy and in your face
Oct 25th, 2017 by Michael Chalk

Loving this slimy weirdness from some superstars of melbn’s punk queer femme colour tribe, messing around with gender, texture, colour and beats.

I saw Gaff-E performing in Fox Pflueger’sFreaky Sexy Weird” earlier this year at Midsumma – she was hilarious and freaky in a disturbing number about cats. Great to see this full production.

The very wonderful Fox is also in the video, along with the creative power behind Fizzy Fingers Fantascinators and Lexi La Fortune.

Warning: possibly NSFW

*melbn.. or wherever they are now, Berlin New York, i don’t know

**Official release at Kaltblut

Went roller skating with friends in the gardens on a recent Sunday afternoon. So much fun. Was looking up the best roller skating videos for the FB event, and found this delightful treat from Chet Faker:

Busker Stories, feat Tash Sultana
Sep 5th, 2016 by Michael Chalk

Busker Stories is a relatively recent production from Mashup Pictures.

Episode 1 features Tash Sultana, whose name has been getting a lot bigger lately, talking about how street performing affects her art and audience.  I like the way they’ve put this show together.

Barack and the re-election
Nov 9th, 2012 by michael chalk

Look i’m one of these people who believes that Barack is genuine. Because i’ve read his accounts of working as a community organiser in the South side of Chicago. Here he talks about that experience with a bunch of kids who just got him re-elected. And i know that success for him is not just gaining the presidency, it’s training these individuals, this new generation of people who can change the world. Who will make a difference.

Via the Huffington Post: Obama Tears Up While Addressing Campaign Staff.

No, he’s not perfect. He’s just an individual, just a man. But i like the way he works.

Okay, i’m going to gather all those US election videos in the one post. Yes i did get a bit obsessed during the election.

What do you really think about smoking?

Okay this one got me.

An interesting take on anti-smoking ads.

No scare tactics.

Thousands in Norway Sing Children Of The Rainbow
Apr 27th, 2012 by michael chalk

I love this story. 40,000 people singing a children’s protest song from the sixties. A song about how we should all just get along and be nice to each other.

Thousands in Norway Sing Peace Song Children Of The Rainbow Against Right-Wing Terrorism Edited – YouTube.

Such an awful reason to be singing. So sad watching, you can feel the grief of the crowd.

77 people killed because a guy had very bad ideas in his head.

And it’s interesting listening to the people in the news story speak Norwegian. You have no idea what they’re actually saying, but at the same time, it’s really clear what they would be saying.

Flap! is beautiful
Aug 19th, 2011 by michael chalk

I’ve seen this bunch of diehard jazz freaks play a few times now: at the Village in Edinburgh Gardens, supporting the inimitable Bohjass at the Northcote Social Club.. and now headlining at the East Brunswick. And each time i see them, i love them even more.

Such brilliant musicianship, such joyful playing, such contained energy in the singing. It’s modern Northcote music that draws on the traditional jazz styles of the 30’s and 40’s. Songs of love.. songs about the chicken truck that goes up High Street late at night.

My dad was mad for a bit of trad jazz, and i think he would have approved of this crowd as well. Read the rest of this entry »

Cycling is something i love too.

Thanks Andrea!

poetry and animation = poenimation?
Sep 5th, 2010 by michael chalk

a beautiful film, via Angelina in the North of Italy, where her new yoga practice is making her seek out tranquility. She’s always had an eye for gorgeousness. This piece comes from people in Halifax, Nova Scotia, one of my favourite places. A woman called Tanya Davis is the poet, and Andrea Dorfman the animator.

Here’s another by the same team, Tanya and Andrea. i like it.

Election – the aftermath
Aug 23rd, 2010 by michael chalk

Following the series of election videos comes this triumph from Taiwan. This is a must-watch video!!
Especially for Julia’s laughter at the crucial moment.
Yes the commentary is in Taiwanese (i think), but you get the picture.

And a very good turn from Paul Keating on Radio national breakfast, before the election (while Rudd was still at the helm).
“Goodness of heart is a requirement for a good country”.
