Jan 19th, 2017 by Michael Chalk

Don’t miss this one if you’re at Rainbow Serpent this year. Real Hot Bitches and Rockerobics doing more than an hour of lycra power.

3:00-5:30pm on the Saturday, Playground Stage (28 January).

Very excited to be selected for this performance.. you’d better be ready to rock.

Here’s the facey event with more details: Real Hot Bitches and Rockerobics at Rainbow.

Lisa Skye is Funny
Jan 18th, 2017 by Michael Chalk

Down at the Village (at Falls) i also saw Lisa-Skye in action, “Your favourite muppet dominatrix”. Her story about the Berlin Sex Club Punch was out of this world hilarious.. but you won’t see that in this video. You’ll have to get lucky, see her live show and hope that story gets selected in the game show format. Yes.

Wonderful Mayhem at the Village Falls
Jan 17th, 2017 by Michael Chalk

An extraordinary festival within another festival, The Village couldn’t be further from Falls, and yet it’s right next door, behind the main stage.

What a pleasure to be involved here, performing with The Real Hot Bitches, and also as a guest of Gherkin Khan’s Amusement Alkazar. Great crew, funny funky times and the best musicians in the whole wild world. Anyone who has had the pleasure of dancing to Tek Tek under the moonlight will know exactly what i’m talking about.

Most fun to be had? Watching all the different band line-ups and working out how many bands all these superstars were across. Carrie Webster, Steph Brett, Paul Dornau, David Bramble, Esther Henderson, Kat Karvess, Thomas Mitchell, Ros Jones, Ania Reynolds – all somehow featured in 3 or more of the supergroups on stage.

Most hilarious moment? David Bramble getting a buzz cut during The Haircuts’ song “Buzz Cut”. Or perhaps when Flaps Salad of the Real Hot Bitches strutted their Mulletty Hotness across the grounds during The Haircuts’ rendition of “Disco Mullet”!!

Most touching moment? Meeting Charlie, a 21 y.o. dude from Frankston who was out-of-sight blown away by the whole Village experience. “Forget the Falls Festival,” he told me, “this place is blowing my mind.. i never knew stuff like this existed.. i just want to find out how to get involved!”

New discoveries? Lisa Skye is a very funny human!!

Out there in the crazy world of the Falls Festival, we also saw some delightful music, eg Client Liaison, London Grammar, Childish Gambino, and the very wonderful Gretta Ray on her first big festival stage. Oh and The Avalanches live on stage for special NYE fun – they were so good!!

Some of the bands i can remember seeing at The Village at Falls:

“Play Me, I’m Yours” was a really beautiful street festival
Apr 24th, 2014 by Michael Chalk

This was a truly beautiful project to be involved with.. i played in the opening with many other people, and then First Chorus had a season singing next to the pianos as well. This video shows great community engagement not only in the city, but also in community centres around the outer suburbs. We had over 20 pianos all playing together in the opening. (There i am in the video, around 3:56, woohoo!)

The summer was stinking hot, but it was still a delight to walk around the city from piano to piano and play for a while. Had a couple of great days, playing keys with Sarah and David, and then another time playing characters with Jules and Stevie.

[secret location] Northcote Cup Day Derby
Feb 8th, 2011 by michael chalk

i just found this entry from Dellywood. Yay for Dell she caught the photo finish at the [Secret Location] Cup Day Derby. i have some photos too from last year’s Billy Cart Rally but haven’t put them anywhere public yet. i heard rumours that the guy who won had been training for months. He was a wild-card re-entrant after being knocked out early on. He is also the one who filmed all the other races by following on his skateboard; and for that i think his victory was so well-deserved.

Here’s some footage from 2009, shot by Man Monkey Durphy. The winner that year was top3 in 2010 as well, i believe.

Dan also has 2009 shots on flickr, here in a slideshow.

The Age has photos from 2009 here.

Hope they run it again and again.

Too much fun.

On top of all that, there’s also a lovely animation too. Dell has skills.

from deceased estate, to dance-a-thon 6000
Oct 17th, 2008 by michael chalk

What a great fringe festival! i’ve only been to three or four events but i’m sure i chose the best ones:

  • Deceased Estate by Roundangle
  • Don’t Cut my Fringe Straight at 3RRR
  • the fully enjoyable dance-athon 6000 from the Town Bikes and known associates ..

oh the Town Bikes .. how ever did the world manage without them, way back in the 20th century?? That’s right, we had the Butt Funky troupe of mischief-makers. Along with their buddies .. the magical dj marieke, the hot slush puppies and more, they roused the crowd into a wet and wild state of krumpy frenzy. Yum.

( What’s this video .. a Town Bikes showreel? They are fun. i love them. )

Deceased Estate was insanely wonderful. Many old stories from the history of an East Brunswick house. Blindfolded sessions, of course, down the side of the house. Shadow theatre, hot milo and monsters in the backyard, a neighbourly dinner party in the front yard with the original family back in 1946.

Harry pours scotch for the gents and tells us he’s delighted that Chifley’s at the helm. The 1940’s couple freeze, as we flash forward to a teenager climbing out the window and listening to Joy Division on her walkman.

.. the live event at 3RRR was a thoroughly weird adventure. Pikelet and Qua were on the bill, so i’d thought it would be fun. Bum Creek started off the action with their bizarre journey into sound .. and the night looked promising. One guy had invented an instrument made out of old coils and springs .. he was hilarious and i wish i’d gotten a photograph.

Ah Melbourne – joy and delight and wonderful weirdness at every turn!

Watch out – i'll Read at you !
Dec 20th, 2007 by Michael Chalk

The shiningly witty Ms Fits has had a book-related brush with some patrons at Meredith.
Story involves a Dog with a dog during Dr Dog (?! yes, read up.)

Apparently, it’s Not Okay to read while Dr Dog is playing. Not even quietly in the distant background. Interferes with other people’s enjoyment. Too freakish. Too girly-swot.

What is going on in this crazy old world. i know we’ve never really been a bookish nation but what happened to live and let effing live. Aren’t Australians supposedly renowned for our laidback and tolerant approach to life?

Oh, i remember tolerance, that was before the time of darkness.
img fahrenheit 451 by sidelongFor about five minutes, after the previous time of darkness.

Not as if Ms Fits was crouched motionless in the mosh pit, reading aloud over the band. The book wasn’t anything like ‘How to Destroy Swamp Rock Fans in One Easy Sitting’.

i guess we just hate interLekchoools. SmartRRRses!
Watch out! They’ll be burning witches next, on piles of books. You mark my words. Lucky she got out alive.

Too much ignorant hooligan-ism-ality going on for my liking !
