Brighter Later debut with The Woods
Nov 30th, 2012 by michael chalk

Have a listen to this sweet new single from Brighter Later, aka Jaye Kranz & Virginia Bott. Sublime sounds. I saw them play the East Brunswick a while back when they were Reuben Montane. Gorgeous atmospheric and folky sounds.

"Cave of Lights" in the Wonderland Spiegeltent (Docklands)
Nov 13th, 2012 by michael chalk

And now, the moment you’ve been waiting for.. 18 months after first chorus band of singers recorded this album with Emma Tonkin.. the Album Party Launch. Cave of Lights is a beautiful album (i reckon), with songs by Emma, arranged for 4 part harmony by Virginia Bott. (I’ve heard that doors open at 8pm, and we sing at 8:45pm.)

I was in the audience for the launch of Emma’s first album at Bar 303 about 5 years ago, and i’ll be singing in this one. There are 25 voices in the band this time round.

8:00pm Saturday 17 Nov, in the Wonderland Spiegeltent (Docklands). Make sure you head to the Docklands, not the Arts Centre.

The official blurb:

For one night only in the magical surrounds of the Wonderland Spiegeltent, Emma Tonkin and First Chorus Band Of Singers are joined by a great band of melbourne musos to launch their 2012 release CAVE OF LIGHTS, a collection of their work together as long-time collaborators of Melbourne’s independent fringe.

The night will kick off with an improvised solo set from guitarist and noisemaker Jed Palmer and the party will continue after the show to the tunes of DJ EDDY. Don’t miss all these folk in the one place creating the magic of this panoramic album live.

first chorus album launch ..approaching
Oct 8th, 2012 by michael chalk

Just noticed that Virginia’s putting some of the songs from Emma Tonkin’s “Cave of Lights” album on soundcloud (the collaboration with first chorus band of singers). You can listen to the song “I will be one” here below. We’re currently rehearsing all the songs with a bunch of wonderful new singers joining the original cast.

Mark this date in your diaries: Saturday 17 November in Melbourne, at the Wonderland Spiegeltent (details to follow – it’s somewhere in the Docklands). Also Saturday 24 November in Castlemaine.

Flight of the Conchords – Feel Inside (and stuff like that)
Sep 17th, 2012 by michael chalk

Aaaaah! Sally played this for me at work the other week. “You won’t be able to get it out of your head,” she said.

And that’s true.

Then i watched it again with Tim and Sam up at Elphinstone the other day. How we laughed.

Apparently the song spent weeks at number one in NZ Aotearoa, and raised about $1 million and a hundred and ten and twenty one. In a bowl.

I love Murray at the start, “Yes and i gave some money back in 1988, so that’s all done now?”

And Jemaine talking about the songs in the Muppet Movie, “They were pretty derivative though, don’t you think?”

8 Foot Felix on the Radio
Aug 16th, 2012 by michael chalk

[not really 8FootFelix, in fact a different band]

Always great to hear your favourite local bands on the radio. I saw 8 Foot Felix play the Wesley Anne the other week, and was struck by how much they have evolved in the year since i saw them last. Apparently they’ve had a world tour, and been to Burning Man. Highlights included a French version of “These boots were made for walking”… really stunning.

Listen to the rambunctious folk from 8 Foot Felix playing live on 3PBS:

A beautiful gig: Sean M Whelan & Isnod at the Wesley Anne…
Aug 7th, 2012 by michael chalk

Saw Sean & Damien perform live the other week at the Wesley Ann and loved it.

Here’s some video from the night. Is this the Michael Hutchence performance? Ah no, it’s “Elemental”.

Electronical music podcasts i've been enjoying
Jul 6th, 2012 by michael chalk

Since i got my android phone, i’ve been loving the radio. Listen-when-you-want kind of radio, aka the PODCAST.

Woo. Here’s a couple of my favourites:

ONE) Elektrocast

This is from a podcast called Elektrokast which i really like (mp3).

Episode 45: “Torro Remote White Light mix”.

Actually it’s 2 years since they stopped broadcasting, but still good sounds.

Posting it here because i thought Tim might like it. DJ Tim, also known as DJ Fluff, runs a very excellent radio show out of Castlemaine called Sensoreum. (Did you have a faceboo page

Gotye interview on NPR (enjoyed)
Jun 21st, 2012 by michael chalk

I really enjoyed this interview with Wally de Becker (aka Gotye). Fascinating guy, and very softly spoken. Doesn’t sound like the whole experience is going to his head, which is nice.

Great anecdote about a singing fence in Queensland, which he used for one of the songs on this album.

Here’s the episode online. It’s taken from one of the NPR podcasts – World Cafe. Ah, i really like the way you can search all their channels for mention of any artist, for example search for Gotye.

Direct link to the mp3 interview here, which you can play or download.

Thousands in Norway Sing Children Of The Rainbow
Apr 27th, 2012 by michael chalk

I love this story. 40,000 people singing a children’s protest song from the sixties. A song about how we should all just get along and be nice to each other.

Thousands in Norway Sing Peace Song Children Of The Rainbow Against Right-Wing Terrorism Edited – YouTube.

Such an awful reason to be singing. So sad watching, you can feel the grief of the crowd.

77 people killed because a guy had very bad ideas in his head.

And it’s interesting listening to the people in the news story speak Norwegian. You have no idea what they’re actually saying, but at the same time, it’s really clear what they would be saying.

This Most Ancient Land – Emma Bathgate & First Chorus
Dec 14th, 2011 by michael chalk

I’ve tracked down this recording of Emma Bathgate with the first chorus band of singers from the Fairfield Amphitheatre. It’s a pretty good recording i think. This was a hilarious day. We debated for some time about whether to perform because of the rain. During this song, the umbrellas all came out. Emma waved away an umbrella when it was offered.
