Intriguing masks by Lauren Simmonds
Jul 16th, 2012 by michael chalk

Here’s a collection of some intriguing works from local Northside artist Lauren Simmonds, the Melbourne artist who works with paper, light & shadow. I love the way she’s got people wearing the art work.

Electronical music podcasts i've been enjoying
Jul 6th, 2012 by michael chalk

Since i got my android phone, i’ve been loving the radio. Listen-when-you-want kind of radio, aka the PODCAST.

Woo. Here’s a couple of my favourites:

ONE) Elektrocast

This is from a podcast called Elektrokast which i really like (mp3).

Episode 45: “Torro Remote White Light mix”.

Actually it’s 2 years since they stopped broadcasting, but still good sounds.

Posting it here because i thought Tim might like it. DJ Tim, also known as DJ Fluff, runs a very excellent radio show out of Castlemaine called Sensoreum. (Did you have a faceboo page

Whoops: Hands up if you always handle a crisis with panache
Jul 3rd, 2012 by michael chalk

From the punch: an interesting perspective on an awkward tv moment. I didn’t see Q&A last night but I’ll see it on iView now!! Amusing comparisons of greg combet with clark kent, and suggestions that sophie mirabella looked as though she may have poisoned her fellow presenter. Can’t wait to see it.

Here’s the video. Yikes. Mirabella received a pasting from the twitterati because of the way she recoiled in horror, but GetUp and others came to her defense:

What do you really think about smoking?

Okay this one got me.

An interesting take on anti-smoking ads.

No scare tactics.

Gotye interview on NPR (enjoyed)
Jun 21st, 2012 by michael chalk

I really enjoyed this interview with Wally de Becker (aka Gotye). Fascinating guy, and very softly spoken. Doesn’t sound like the whole experience is going to his head, which is nice.

Great anecdote about a singing fence in Queensland, which he used for one of the songs on this album.

Here’s the episode online. It’s taken from one of the NPR podcasts – World Cafe. Ah, i really like the way you can search all their channels for mention of any artist, for example search for Gotye.

Direct link to the mp3 interview here, which you can play or download.

Thousands in Norway Sing Children Of The Rainbow
Apr 27th, 2012 by michael chalk

I love this story. 40,000 people singing a children’s protest song from the sixties. A song about how we should all just get along and be nice to each other.

Thousands in Norway Sing Peace Song Children Of The Rainbow Against Right-Wing Terrorism Edited – YouTube.

Such an awful reason to be singing. So sad watching, you can feel the grief of the crowd.

77 people killed because a guy had very bad ideas in his head.

And it’s interesting listening to the people in the news story speak Norwegian. You have no idea what they’re actually saying, but at the same time, it’s really clear what they would be saying.

This Most Ancient Land – Emma Bathgate & First Chorus
Dec 14th, 2011 by michael chalk

I’ve tracked down this recording of Emma Bathgate with the first chorus band of singers from the Fairfield Amphitheatre. It’s a pretty good recording i think. This was a hilarious day. We debated for some time about whether to perform because of the rain. During this song, the umbrellas all came out. Emma waved away an umbrella when it was offered.

Bigmouth strikes again
Dec 14th, 2011 by michael chalk

Well that was fun.

Last night I sang with around 80 people in Stephen Taberner’s Bigmouth choir at the Northcote town hall.

We sang stephen’s arrangements of numbers like The Smiths’ “There is a light that never goes out”, and Garbage “Only happy when it rains.

Between choir pieces, he’d orchestrated performers like Dan Whitton of the Wikimen, and a group of singers from Princes Hill HS. These were all amazing and a delight to experience.

I feel bad for not inviting all my friends now. I’d only been to 3 rehearsals and there were around 10 songs so I kinda thought I wouldn’t even perform. But somehow managed to learn most of them in time. The last song i had to have lyrics on my phone, and sneak in a look.

Dancers in a 3 way mistletoe dress
Nov 15th, 2011 by michael chalk

Now here is a remarkable performance, for both dance and costume.

You’ve got Zoe and Bronwen and Priscilla dancing in Rebecca Mayo‘s mistletoe dress.

Looks like Some Kind of Art to me.

.

I work with Zoe. She is an amazing person to have around the office. Really brightens your day.
