I'd be interested to read a follow-up post on your views re their accessibility, particularly for our students (older ESL).
My initial impression of the Easi-speak was that it was less user-friendly than expected. Consequently ours is gathering dust in the filing cabinet since the start of the school year as I haven't used it or promoted it amongst the staff at CNLC. (Meanwhile, by contrast, I've had some early success with the Flip camera in the classroom.)

Hi Michael, I love your Blog page - so beautifully presented!
I am delighted to see this reference to one our great thought leaders on elearning, Stephen Downes has a particularly 'pithy' way of presenting.
I think Stephen must have 'borrowed' the term 'taking charge of learning' from us. That's cool. CC

---[michael]---
Thanks so much Coach Carole for your kind comments.
Yes i've just updated the theme - needed a change. (The old theme had 3 columns so i had to adjust a bit.)

You're right, Stephen is very good at speaking concisely and to the point (and i've just expanded your 'pithy' to 5 words).

I was wrong about Skydrive's flexibility - in fact, they offer only temporary direct linking. After a short time (about 24 hours?) the link goes dead. The only recourse is to send readers to a publicly accessible folder, where they can chose to either open or download a file. (Can they modify and then upload again? I don't know - Skydrive has been making quiet changes in the past few months, alas.)

W.

(mic: Thanks for the info and the clarification, Wendell. Ah those quiet changes.. many of these "cloud companies" seem to get in the crowds of people then make their changes in the background.)

I haven't tried Scribd, though I know it's very popular. (Of course, so is Limewire - with fearful consequences.)

I like Google docs except they (used to? still?) limit upload size. It's okay for text-only, but if you try uploading, say, a report with photos, you're sunk. The good part is that your doc or spreadsheet will open like a webpage - no downloading required - and you can collaborate.

My tool of choice is MSN's Skydrive, which is attached to Hotmail / Window's Live. It has lots of capacity, offers download or "open with" and allows private, selective or public viewing. The only hitch I've had is that filenames with spaces (e.g. Wendells Notes, instead of Wendells_Notes) won't download / open properly within Firefox.

Regards,

Hi Wendell, thanks for your messages. i know the feeling of being divided between optimism and cynicism. Sometimes i've been cynical in a intended-to-be-humorous way, only to realise that the students are way more cynical than i am, but without the humour. Oops.

Sorry about the scowling pumpkin head.. i think there is some way to change it, but it might involve logging into wordpress.com, or maybe me adding a plugin.

kind regards, michael

I'm often tore between presenting the best face of economics and politics (in order to be encouraging) and a more realistic picture: e.g., you're statistically more apt to die in a motor vehicle accident on the way to the polls than you are to change the outcome of an election.

It's not exactly half-empty / half-full stuff. It's more, "The glass is half full... but it might not be safe to drink."

Best wishes

Getting feedback / support from all these web2 apps: it would it be useful to send Google the details of the Forms issue for them to consider. It seems to be a great tool for future use.

Bubbleshare finally acknowledged their bug (for those trying to downloading our slideshows before the went belly up). Unfortunately they didn't fix it in time for me - I made other arrangements (involving hours of editing and culling of the originals, again).

And considering all the work we've done using Screencastomatic, I'm sure they'd be interested in our feedback. It seems that their intention with the application is ease of use and that should include being able to get hold of your work to download afterwards and more effective functionality of the channels.
