You won’t believe it but Jessie Tucker is having her 3rd exhibition this year, and it’s a beauty.

Another round of 3D painting-style sculptures, this time focussing on fables like the 3 wise jellyfish, the pigeon and the birds of paradise, the tiger and the moth. Gorgeous, magical pieces.

Get yourself to the nunnery and drink in this splendour.

Funny bunch of Indie characters in Cafe of Doom

So i discovered this comic via my new android phone. And i really like it.

One of those stories where you just want to read the next bit, and the next bit. Funny characters, relationship issues, obscure musical references, interesting tee-shirts, plenty of punchline, engaging visuals.

Yes i keep wanting to know what happens to the characters, so i think i’ve read 6 years worth in 6 weeks. Keeps me from spending all my spare time watching television series like BSG and Glee.

If you’re into comics at all, i’d recommend this one.

This is Melbourne, there’s always a dozen amazing exhibitions to visit.

I reckon these two could be really good.

Skin and Bone

Lauren Simmonds (had) an exhibition opening Thursday 3 June at the Napier Hotel – Skin and Bone - upstairsatthenapier.org/ Lauren also had a huge piece at the Trocadero in Footscray recently which was astounding and beautiful.. her work draws you into its intriguing depths.

The World at Large

Plus i’ve just had a sneak preview of Ahmarnya Price’s latest collection. Ahmarnya’s opening at Gilligan Gallery on the 12th June, a Saturday matinee session. There’s a whole year full of diptych works that had me staring in wonderment for as long as i could. Each month echoes the themes and motifs of the month before, telling a story of hair and skirts and transformation.

Don’t you love that delicious sensation of being surrounded by genius artistic people!

Gorgeous art in Brunswick

Went to see Jessie Tucker’s exhibition at the Brunswick Arts Space last night. She’s made a thoroughly gorgeous set of “rare birds” – Avis Rara – in the style of trophies on the wall, with beautiful colour and design.

i wish i’d taken some photos, because all the pieces sold within the first 90 minutes, and who knows when i’ll get all the way back to old Brunswick town again.

An owl, a flamingo, a couple of love birds, some kind of hummingbird with a unicorn – all with lovely old world titles. My favourite was definitely the owl and i was thinking of investing, but i took too long thinking about it and bam, someone else grabbed it.

Would definitely recommend you pop into the gallery and see the birds before they fly off to their new homes.

Ahmarnya Price comes from Brisvegas originally.. and now she’s joined the community of Northcote. Hooray for the artists of Northcote!

She’s just put a bunch of her work up on a blogspot thing. Totally worth a look.. luscious, beautiful, surreal images. I especially like the collection on “Water and Air“.

Sheffield Murals

Public art is more popular in Tasmania than i realised. Here’s a whole town that devoted itself to supporting local artists by painting murals on every available surface (Sheffield, slightly East of Cradle Mountain).

And i caught a picture of this very strange dog. I thought it must have been an elaborate kind of poodle. “Look at this dog,” i said to Tim. “You idiot, that’s an Alpaca,” he replied. Oh, yes i see that now.

Plus, this little valley called Wilmot, on the way to Cradle Mountain, has an abundance of Gorgeous Quirky letterboxes; and even a mural, celebrating said boxes.

Big gig for Yogyakarta earthquaki

Last night, here in Melbn, Oz, the world capital of art and culture, we experienced the Snuff Puppets’ version of the Twin Towers – very irreverent and moderately shocking. Two people dressed in enormous skyscraper costumes were battered by an Arab puppet with an aeroplane on a stick. Tremendous Art.

(But we should remember, that it’s not okay to laugh about that day because, “the world changed from that day on“, as Marylou Badeaux reminds us in this Herald Sun article.)

As well as the Snuffies and, again, the amazing Town Bikes (Suxy and Fuxy go Clubbing – you has to see to believe), The Spanish Club also saw the astonishingly insane Dilapidated Diva emerge from retirement for a glamorous performance of La Vie en Rose.

After encouraging seven volunteers to lie on the stage with their legs in the air, so she could lick and caress their shoes, my favourite moment was when the Diva pulled apart her microphone mid-song, and throwing it on the stage in frustration, continued to sing at full voice, while dancing with a man in a yellow raincoat. The woman is a genius.

Her parting shot was of course, the middle finger up at her loving audience, “You are all assholes!” she cried.

Tim, Sam, Nathan and Michael joined the crowds to boogie at Spanish Club (Kenny Lopez’ Cuban All Stars), Laundry and then the Old Bar. Going wild with Leanne on the dance floor, when the DJ came up with two beers and said, “These are for you, for being the BEST dancers EVER.” She was playing AC/DC mixed with 1950′s Rocknroll, what could we do? I’ve got to say this was easily the best award i’ve EVER received in my LIFE.
